He played as a centre-back for FC Twente, De Graafschap, RKC Waalwijk and FC Utrecht. He had three stints with Twente, with whom he won the KNVB Cup in the 2000–01 season. He is currently the manager at Ajax, where he has won two Eredivisie titles as well as reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2019.
